Mogao Caves (Tang Caves)

Fly into Dunhuang Mogao Airport (DNH) -- direct flights from Lanzhou (1.5h), Xi'an (2.5h), Beijing (4h). From airport: taxi to Dunhuang city center (13km, 30 min, 50 CNY). The Mogao Caves Digital Exhibition Center (莫高窟数字展示中心) is 9km southeast of Dunhuang city. Take the green city shuttle bus (line 绿皮专线) from outside Dunhuang Hotel or the bus station -- 20 CNY, departs every 30 min, 30 min ride. Taxi from Dunhuang city center: 60 CNY one way. NOTE: you CANNOT drive directly to the caves. All visitors must go to the Digital Center first, watch two orientation films (40 min total), then take the park shuttle bus (included in ticket) 15km to the actual caves.

Dunhuang city is compact and all hotels are within 10 min of the shuttle bus. Best options: Silk Road Dunhuang Hotel (敦煌丝路酒店, 4-star, 400-500 CNY/night, Silk Road-themed decor, 5 min to shuttle, best overall); Dunhuang Mountain Villa (敦煌山庄, 600-800 CNY/night, luxury desert-resort style, excellent restaurant); Dunhuang Yunfei International Youth Hostel (敦煌云飞国际青年旅舍, 50 CNY/dorm, 150 CNY/private, popular backpacker spot, arranges desert camping tours). Book 2-3 weeks ahead during peak season (May-Oct). Some hotels can help book Mogao tickets -- ask when reserving.

Dunhuang food reflects its Silk Road crossroads location -- a mix of Chinese, Central Asian, and Muslim influences. Must-try: Lanzhou beef noodles (兰州牛肉面, 15-20 CNY, the definitive northwest Chinese breakfast -- best at Ma Zilu Beef Noodles 马子禄牛肉面 near the night market); mutton skewers (羊肉串, 3-5 CNY per skewer, grilled over charcoal with cumin and chili, best at Shazhou Night Market after 7pm); Dunhuang huang mian (敦煌黄面, yellow wheat noodles in lamb broth, local specialty, 20-30 CNY); Dunhuang xing pi cha (杏皮茶, local apricot tea, cold, sweet, 5 CNY per cup, sold everywhere). The Shazhou Night Market (沙洲夜市) is the culinary heart of Dunhuang -- 100+ food stalls, open 6pm-midnight. Try the dried fruits and melons -- Dunhuang melons are legendary (July-Sept).

Spring (April-May): 10-25C, occasional sandstorms (bring sunglasses and a scarf). This is the best period -- pleasant temperatures, clear skies. Autumn (September-October): 10-25C, also excellent. Summer (June-August): 25-40C, very hot midday but the caves stay cool (naturally climate-controlled by the cliff face). Go at the earliest slot (8:30am). Winter (November-March): -10 to 5C, some caves close for conservation rotation, far fewer visitors. The Mogao Caves operate year-round with reduced capacity in winter. First morning slot (8:30am) has the best light quality for looking at murals -- the low-angle sun brings out colors. Book Standard Visit tickets (8 caves, 238 CNY) 2-3 weeks ahead via the official WeChat mini-program (search 莫高窟参观预约). English guide tours available -- request when booking.

This is the single greatest body of Tang pictorial art on earth -- 45,000 sq meters of murals across 492 caves. The Standard Visit shows 8 caves (including the famous Cave 96 with the 35m Buddha, Cave 16-17 Library Cave, and Cave 45 with the best Tang sculptures). Tours are strictly guided, 25 people per group, timed at 75-90 minutes. NO photography of any kind inside caves -- phone cameras included. The flash destroys pigments. Before the caves: the Digital Center shows two excellent 20-min films -- the first on Silk Road history, the second a 360-degree virtual cave tour. After the caves: visit the Mogao Caves Exhibition Center (free, near the cave exit) for replica caves you CAN photograph. Combine with Singing Sand Dunes & Crescent Moon Spring (鸣沙山月牙泉, 5km from city, 120 CNY, go at sunrise or sunset) and Yumen Pass (玉门关, 90km northwest, the ancient Han Dynasty Silk Road gate).
