Largest Tang wooden structure still standing. Liang Sicheng found it in 1937 while searching for surviving Tang buildings. Japanese scholars had claimed none existed in China. It proved Tang timber-frame architecture was real.
How to Get There
Fly into Taiyuan Wusu Airport (TYN, IATA code). From Taiyuan: hire a private car with driver -- this is essential. Current rate is 600-800 CNY per day including fuel. The drive takes 4 hours each way on the G55 expressway then S310 provincial road -- the last 40km is a narrow mountain road with hairpin turns, fully paved but steep. There is NO bus service to Foguang Temple. The nearest town Doucun (豆村) is 10km away and has no taxi service. Your driver will wait while you visit. If coming from Beijing: fly or HSR to Taiyuan (2.5h HSR, 200 CNY), then proceed as above. From Xi'an: HSR to Taiyuan (3.5h, 180 CNY).
Where to Stay
Doucun village (10km from temple): basic farmhouse guesthouses called nongjiale (农家乐), 80-150 CNY/night, shared bathrooms, no English. Most travelers day-trip from Taiyuan and return same day. Taiyuan hotels: Pullman Taiyuan near Wuyi Square (500-600 CNY/night, international standard, English-speaking staff, best mid-range option); Taiyuan Wanda Realm (400-500 CNY/night, connected to shopping mall with restaurants); Hanting Hotel near railway station (160-200 CNY/night, clean budget chain, Chinese only). Book via Trip.com or Ctrip for foreigner-friendly hotels.
What to Eat
Shanxi cuisine is wheat-based and hearty. Must-try dishes: dao xiao mian (刀削面, knife-cut noodles in lamb broth -- the signature Shanxi dish, available at any noodle shop for 15-25 CNY); guo you rou (过油肉, oil-braised pork strips with wood ear mushroom and spring onion, 30-50 CNY at restaurants); you mian kao lao lao (莜面栲栳栳, steamed rolled oatmeal tubes dipped in mutton sauce, a rustic mountain staple). In Doucun: one family-run noodle shop near the village entrance serves simple dao xiao mian (15 CNY) and liang pi (cold noodles). Bring packed lunch from Taiyuan for the temple visit. Taiyuan: Taiyuan Mianshi Guan (太原面食馆) on Jiefang Road serves 50+ noodle varieties -- allow 60-80 CNY/person.
Best Time to Visit
April, May, September, October are ideal -- daytime 15-25C, clear mountain air, dry. The temple courtyard gets golden afternoon light around 3-4pm. June-August: 25-35C, afternoon thunderstorms possible, road is fine but humid. November-March: temple open but mountain road may close after snow; daytime 0-10C; temple caretaker may reduce hours. The temple opens 8:30am-5:30pm year-round. Chinese New Year (late Jan/Feb): temple may close for 1-3 days -- call ahead. Golden Week (Oct 1-7): surprisingly manageable here -- too remote for mass tourism. Visit early morning for best light and solitude.
Tips for Foreign Travelers
CRITICAL: No English signage anywhere in the temple or surrounding area. Download Pleco (Chinese dictionary app) and Baidu Translate offline pack before the trip. Google Maps does NOT work reliably in China -- use Baidu Maps or Amap (高德地图). Your driver can navigate but you'll need the temple name in Chinese: 佛光寺东大殿. Bring CASH -- no credit cards, no WeChat Pay for foreigners without Chinese bank account. Bring at least 200 CNY per person. Altitude is 1,500m -- bring a light jacket even in summer; mountain evenings are cool. The toilets are primitive squat toilets -- bring your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer. Photography is permitted in the courtyard but flash is prohibited inside the hall. Combine with Nanchan Temple (30 min drive) -- they are on the same mountain road. A driver will charge 800 CNY total for both temples in one day.
