Built 652 under Xuanzang to house sutras from India. Current structure is Ming dynasty but follows Tang form on original Tang foundation. One of few tangible Tang landmarks in Xi an.
How to Get There

What to Eat
Xi'an is arguably China's best food city. Near the pagoda: the area around Yanta West Road and Cuihua Road has dozens of restaurants. Must-try: rou jia mo (肉夹馍, minced pork in baked flatbread, Xi'an's 'Chinese burger', 10-15 CNY from street stalls); yang rou pao mo (羊肉泡馍, lamb soup with hand-torn flatbread, 30-50 CNY at a restaurant -- go to Yishenlou 义盛楼 near Bell Tower); liang pi (凉皮, cold wheat noodles in chili-vinegar sauce, 8-12 CNY). The Muslim Quarter (回民街 Huimin Jie, 20 min by taxi north) is Xi'an's most famous food street -- 200+ stalls serving lamb skewers, persimmon cakes, pomegranate juice. Go in the evening for the full atmosphere. For upscale: First Noodle Under the Sun (天下第一面) near Dayanta serves biang biang mian (belt noodles) -- 60-80 CNY/person.
Best Time to Visit
April, May, September, October: 15-28C, comfortable. The pagoda opens 8am-5:30pm. Best photos: early morning (8-9am) when tour groups haven't arrived, or sunset (5-6pm) when the pagoda catches golden light. Summer (June-August): 30-40C, very crowded with domestic tourists; go at 8am or after 4pm. Winter (Nov-Feb): 0-10C, the pagoda looks striking with snow on the eaves, much fewer visitors. The North Square fountain show runs nightly at 8:30pm (free, 20 min) -- impressive but crowded. Chinese New Year: special lantern displays. Golden Week (Oct 1-7): extremely crowded, avoid if possible.
Tips for Foreign Travelers
IMPORTANT: This is a Ming dynasty (1500s) rebuild on a Tang foundation. NOT a Tang original structure. The pagoda is 64m tall, 7 floors, with a narrow interior staircase (no elevator). Climbing takes 10-15 min. The combo ticket (pagoda + Daci'en Temple complex, 50 CNY) is worth it. Book Shaanxi History Museum (free, 1km south) 3-5 days ahead via WeChat mini-program -- it has the best Tang artifacts anywhere. The museum fills quotas daily; book for 8:30am slot. For foreigners: download Alipay and link your international credit card before arriving in China -- it works for most purchases including museum bookings. The Dayanta area is very walkable -- you can combine pagoda + museum + Great Tang All Day Mall (1km south) in one day.
