Why Visit

Brown-glazed brick pagoda that survived floods, wars, and the Yellow River shifting course. Only Song structure above ground in Kaifeng.

How to Get There

Kaifeng Iron Pagoda (开封铁塔) is in the northeast corner of Kaifeng's old city. Fly into Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport (CGO, 70km south of Kaifeng). From airport: direct shuttle bus to Kaifeng (1.5 hours, 40 CNY) or HSR from Zhengzhou East Station to Kaifeng North Station (20 min, 25 CNY, every 20 min). From Kaifeng North HSR Station: taxi 20 min to Iron Pagoda (25 CNY). From Kaifeng Railway Station: Bus 1, 3, 4, or 20 to Iron Pagoda Park (铁塔公园). Taxi from anywhere in Kaifeng: 15-20 CNY. The pagoda is inside Iron Pagoda Park -- you'll see it rising above the park wall as you approach.

Where to Stay

Kaifeng is budget-friendly. Kaifeng Guesthouse Hotel (350 CNY/night, inside Qingming Riverside Garden area, Song-themed rooms); Pullman Kaifeng (450 CNY/night, near Dragon Pavilion/Long Ting scenic area, international standard, best in town); 7 Days Inn Kaifeng Drum Tower (130 CNY/night, near the night market, basic but clean). Kaifeng has no luxury international hotels -- the Pullman is the top option. For a unique stay: the area around the Drum Tower (鼓楼) has converted courtyard guesthouses -- Qingming Shanghe Yuan Hotel (300 CNY).

What to Eat

Kaifeng is one of China's great night-market food cities. Must-try: guan tang bao (灌汤包, soup-filled steamed buns, Kaifeng's signature dish -- the skin is so thin you drink the soup through a straw, 25-40 CNY per basket, best at Kaifeng Diyilou 开封第一楼 since 1922); tong zi ji (桶子鸡, whole young chicken braised in spiced broth then chilled and sliced, 50-80 CNY); hua sheng gao (花生糕, Kaifeng peanut cake, 10 CNY per box, sold everywhere in the night market); xing ren cha (杏仁茶, hot almond tea with dried fruit, 8-15 CNY, street stalls). The Drum Tower Night Market (鼓楼夜市, Gulou Yeshi) is Kaifeng's culinary heart -- opens 6pm, runs until midnight, 100+ food stalls in a block-wide pedestrian square. Also: Xisi Night Market (西司夜市) near Baogong Lake -- less touristy than Drum Tower, more local clientele.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (April-May): 15-25C, comfortable, the park's gardens bloom. Autumn (September-October): 12-24C, clear skies, Kaifeng Chrysanthemum Festival (mid-October to mid-November) fills the park with elaborate chrysanthemum displays -- the best time to visit. Summer (June-August): 28-38C, very humid (Kaifeng sits on the Yellow River floodplain), visit early morning. Winter: 0-8C, dry and grey, the brown-glazed pagoda stands stark against a Henan winter sky -- minimalist beauty. Hours: 8am-5:30pm (summer), 8am-5pm (winter). Admission: 40 CNY.

Tips for Foreign Travelers

This is the ONLY Song dynasty structure still above ground in Kaifeng. All of Northern Song Kaifeng -- the million-person capital of the world's richest empire -- lies buried 8 meters under Yellow River silt, deposited by centuries of floods. This pagoda survived because it was built on a small hill. The pagoda is 55.9 meters tall, 13 stories, and built of brown-glazed brick (NOT iron -- the name comes from the iron-like color). You CAN climb the interior staircase (steep, narrow, no handrails on some sections -- not recommended for claustrophobic or elderly visitors). The 360-degree view from upper windows shows the Yellow River to the north and modern Kaifeng sprawling below. The park surrounding the pagoda is pleasant but unremarkable. First: visit Kaifeng Museum (开封博物馆, free, 1 hour) to understand what Song Kaifeng looked like -- it has excellent diorama models. Then: Qingming Riverside Garden (清明上河园, 1998 theme park, 120 CNY) is 20 min by taxi on the other side of the old city -- go if you want the theme park experience, skip if you only want genuine history.
